My Writing Journey
For in Him we live and move and have our being...
So, how exactly does one become a published author? All I know for sure is that I’m determined to figure it out. My general plan is this: to live in the flow of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to direct my paths on this journey, and so far, quite a journey it has been.
After completing my graduate degree in writing at Regent University in 1994, I spent the following years as a wife, mother, dancer, and teacher, only writing some poems and a few short plays along the way. It wasn’t until 2001 that I even had the idea for my first novel, but then came baby number three and five years of homeschooling.
Finally in 2006, I felt I had gained the needed life experience to become an author, and that it was time to get to work telling my stories. Now after nearly four years of writing, studying the craft, working with editors, and rewriting, I’m almost there. In the past year I have become a member of the Inkwell Inspirations blog, HEWN Marketing, ACFW, and a contributor to Christian Review of Books.
I’ve spent a long time preparing myself both spiritually and professionally for publication. I know that I’ve done my part, and I pray that the Holy Spirit will see my journey through to a fulfilling end.
My completed novel, Dance of the Dandelion, is currently represented by Janet Benrey at http://benreyliterary.com, and I look forward with hopeful anticipation to finding a publisher for it. Dandelion is poor medieval peasant girl who longs for love, but haunting childhood memories stand in her path. It received Overall Winner and
1st Place Historical in the 2009 Touched by Love contest sponsored by the Faith, Hope, and Love Chapter of the Romance Writers of America. To read more about Dance of the Dandelion or its sequel Lily of the Valley please visit my fiction link.
I have recently completed my first non-fiction title, Secrets of the Teddy Bear Indian Dance, Mysteries Unveiled While Spinning Between Earth and Sacred Praise. This book contains a post-modern collection of personal stories, essays, reflections, and poetry surrounding thematic spiritual subjects. Visit my nonfiction link for more information as well as a sample chapter.
Author Golden Keyes Parsons says,
“The almost musical, lyrical writing of new author, Dina Sleiman, invites the reader to join in the Dance of Dandelion from the very first sentence of the book. I felt the raw poverty of the young peasant girl, Dandelion, and agonized with her as she searched to fill the empty places in her heart. A stunning debut novel, I look forward to what will be forthcoming from this talented author.”
